Having a Book Travel the World

This idea came to mind a few years ago when my family took us on a cruise to Mexico, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands.

On the cruise ship they had this small library with a lot of book I have never heard of. When I was looking through the books I didn’t really find anything interesting, so I left, deciding to read the books that I brought.

When I found my parents later that afternoon my dad said he had found a book inside of a bag, with a note accompanying it.

I read the note, and it basically said that this book was traveling the world, and it came with a few rules.

  1. Read the book
  2. Write your name and country on the paper
  3. When you were done, leave it somewhere for somebody else to find

I never really thought much about it at the time, but the idea stuck in my mind, and I’m thinking about trying it.

I live in the middle province of Canada, and during the winter time there isn’t a lot of tourism coming through here since it’s so cold, though I don’t think there is a lot of tourims as it is normally during the warmer months.

What is good about this time of year though is everybody wants to leave here because as I write this, its almost -20ºC outside, which is relatively mild for our winters.

So it’s decided.

I’m gonna find a local author who wrote a book that I like, throw it in a plastic bag with a few pieces of paper and write up the rules.

I’m interested to see how well this could do. Maybe I’ll leave it with someone who is going on vacation, and ask them to leave it somewhere more populated. I’d love to see where it can travel.

A little part of me is excited, and hopes that it’ll travel all over the world, but the realist in me knows it’ll likely end up lost or thrown in the trash, but who knows?!

What do you think of the idea? Maybe if someone is interested I could send it to them, and have them help me out. Let me know what you think about the idea in the comments.
