Top 10 Tuesday: My Top 10 Protagonists

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

TTT-NEW

This is my first time doing it, and today’s list is a freebie as long as it involves characters, and this post is long overdue.  For today’s list I decided on 10 of my favourite protagonists in books I’ve read. They’re not necessarily the best protagonists, but they’re some of the best.

They are in no particular order.

Tarzan

Tarzan might be one of your favourite Disney characters, but he is also the star of a number of books. I really enjoyed reading Tarzan’s books and that’s why he is on my list. He’s obviously a very strong and athletic human and could quite easily beat up any of his enemies, but he is one of the most gentle characters I’ve ever read.

I really enjoyed learning alongside Tarzan, and his love of Jane was a refreshing romance that develops throughout the books.

Nynaeve

This is one of the newer members on this list, but honestly she would probably be in my top 5 favourite characters if I was ranking them properly. I love how strong of a character she is, and how determined she is to be the best at what she does.

What I like most about her though is the fact that she pushes herself. She pushes herself, often too hard, to be the best and do better, and blames herself even when something minor goes wrong. She pulls off some amazing feats, and then will immediately blame herself for something she did wrong. I related to this so much, and this is why Nynaeve is one of my favourite characters of all time.

Arya Stark

Arya is cool, badass, smart, scary, and downright awesome all wrapped into one. As one of the Stark kids, her life has not been easy, but she has pushed through it all and has become pretty amazing in the process.

She’s also a main source of the non-Westeros story line we get in Game of Thrones. She develops some magical powers, and it’s cool seeing a female character, in a world where they are often useless, become one of the strongest and scariest characters in the whole world.

Liesel Meminger

Liesel made this list because I feel like she represents an aspect of who I am. She discovers a love of books and reading, and sacrifices her safety for the safety of others.

I want to believe that I am similar to her in some ways, and the sadness of her story is what makes her character so amazing.

King Arthur

I’m speaking of King Arthur from The Once and Future King more specifically, but Arthur in general is one of my favourite characters across any platform.

He stands for chivalry, honour, wisdom and strength. He represents the good in people, and isn’t the stereotypical warrior king that people might assume come from the Middle Ages period.

Even during all this, he is still human. He feels betrayal, he shows weakness, he gets hurt. He’s a godly figure that lives as a human, an that’s why he has made my list.

Jaime Lannister

This is the second and last Game of Thrones entry on this list, but I think he is deserving of the praise. Jaime makes my list because he is a lot like King Arthur in a way. He is this praised and revered character that basically has the heavens opening up for him…until he is dragged through the mud and the dirt and left in the garbage.

He is taken from his high horse, and he changes. He adapts. His character changes and develops and grows with the story, and he becomes a good guy. We see a character change from evil to good, and as he is no longer praised by the story characters, he starts being praised by the readers.

Martin the Warrior

Did you ever think a mouse could make the list? Well you would be wrong. Martin the Warrior is from some of my favourite books of all time, and he stands for the good in people.

He’s a noble warrior that fights for the good of those who can’t protect themselves. His life isn’t easy, but he fights through it, serving the side of good and helping anyone he can, despite his pain and his own problems.

Garrett Reilly

This may be more of an unknown member on my list, but I like Garrett Reilly a lot. He’s a gifted genius who has struggled through life, and still struggles. He could very easily be making millions of dollars, living any life he wanted by using his intelligence, but instead he uses his brains to help defend his country from opposing threats.

There’s not much else to say here other than I really enjoy his development. He is very much a lone wolf that we see develop into not only a team player, but also a leader and friend.

Luffy

This might not be a surprise to anyone who reads this blog, but Luffy is definitely one of my top 5 characters as well. The biggest reason is that he stands up for his ideals and his friends.

You can insult him all you want, and people do, but as soon as you try to crush someone else’s dreams, or hurt someone weaker than yourself, he is going to make you wish you didn’t. I could probably write an essay on Luffy and why he is such a good character, but I will leave it there.

Kaladin

Kaladin is from the Stormlight Archives, and like Luffy and Nynaeve, he is in my top 5 characters. Why do I like him so much? He’s not perfect. Yeah he’s probably the best doctor around, and definitely one of the best fighters, but he doubts himself.

He makes mistakes and beats himself up and doubts himself constantly, but will consistently help others. He will see the best in them and trust them completely, even if it hurts him.

My Top 5 Instagram Artists

The word artistic is one word that is never associated to me. I am far from artsy, and should steer clear of making art, for fear of ruining what the word means.

What I can do though, is appreciate some really wonderful artists that I enjoy, so I’ve made a Top 5 list of my favourite Instagram artists.

Before I start I will apologize now for all of the butchering of any and all artistic terms that will be found somewhere in this post, and if you have any suggestions for artists to take a look at, please let me know! I’m always looking for new accounts to explore.

NUMBER 5: @albin_smaili97

Albin does some really amazing work creating anime themed art, and has a focus of doing different mashups for each piece. Another thing Albin likes to do is create the same picture, but in three different styles and each one of them looks distinct and cool in its own way.

He has a big focus on Naruto themed sketches, but does include some other anime and uses the same style. If you’re an anime fan I definitely recommend taking a look at Albin’s nice, what looks like pen, drawings. It’s a sort of ‘messy’ look, but when it’s all done it looks really cool.

Check out some of the awesome mashup art here.

NUMBER 4: @lulusketches

So as I found out, Laura (lulusketches) is an artist that works for Disney (dream job for many I assume) and creates some really spectacular pieces. Some scenery art, some character design, Laura creates some beautiful pieces of art you should definitely check out.

I don’t know the term for her type of art style, but its cartoonish and her use of colours truly mimic the real life they are eminating.

NUMBER 3: @jasricart

Jasric loves her her superheroes, and does a hell of a good job drawing them. Don’t get me wrong though, her superheroes are spectacular, but she does other pieces as well.

Whether it’s anime, comic book, or fantasy inspired, Jasric’s Instagram is a perfect platform to showcase her talent.

I don’t know what her art style would be called, but whatever it is, you can see her progression of some of her drawings, and she has gone from great to somehow even better

Check out her Instagram profile for some beautiful artwork.

NUMBER 2: @danielkordek

Daniel has got his subjects figured out on his Instagram page, and does a great job capturing them in his work.  There are some really gorgeous pieces, whether they are based on his own imagination or using a cartoon to base his drawing off of.

He has a lot of simplistic art pieces that are truly amazing to look at, and his pieces are a lot more tasteful than some other artists who have a similar style. There are some wonderful cartoon style drawing you should definitely check out.

Check out his wonderful art here.

NUMBER 1: @megancrisp2424

I don’t know what this art style would be called, but I have always loved it, and Megan’s Instagram account is filled with it! The pieces are usually pretty simple, but it is in the simplicity that the beauty is found. Her art tends to have one main focus, taking up most of the picture, but the one subject is all you need to look at.

Megan has cute and adorable pieces and even some more serious ones. When I was looking at most of her pieces I could imagine it being from a cartoon or animated short film.

Check out Megan’s Instagram page here.

This isn’t an extensive list of the whole art community on Instagram, but just my favourite artists that I know about. I hope you enjoyed the list!

Thursday Thoughts: My Top 10 Fictional Worlds I Want to Live In

I think every reader thinks of being a part of the books they read, and has had more than a few dreams being in those books too.

Everyone who has ever dreamed that has a list of their favourite worlds they’d want to be a part of, so I’m making mine official.

The criteria for this list is that I will be assuming I am a person of at least minor importance in the world, because assuming I am just a dime a dozen character, my experience of the world wouldn’t be very much…here goes.

NUMBER X: INKWORLD

Lombrica_and_Argenta_map.png

This one really only made my list because I am assuming that I have the ability to, or know someone who has the ability to bring books to life. It would be amazing to be able to bring any other book to life and meet the characters or have them live in my world, assuming I don’t accidently bring a dragon or some beast to this world and destroy it.

NUMBER IX: STAR WARS

Unknown.jpeg

The Star Wars Universe made this list because of how vast it is. There are so many planets that could be explored, and some interesting technology that would fascinate me. Now I’m gonna assume I’ve got a little bit of money or skill that would allow me to travel around the galaxy, and not some moisture farmer that never lets me leave Tatooine.

NUMBER VIII: OZ

Unknown-1.jpeg

I was a little surprised myself that Oz made it into my list. It was an honorable mention when I first started out, but then I realized how cool it could really be. I mean there is witches, munchkins, the Lollipop Guild, talking lions, and who knows what else. I haven’t had too much experience with Oz, but I think it would be an amazing world to explore and expereince.

NUMBER VII: INFERNAL DEVICES

f35405f6b4064bfd694b96116bb64469edae002b_hq.jpg

For those that don’t recognize this world right away its the Shadowhunter World, like City of Bones, but set in the Victorian era, and not modern times. Assuming I can be some nameless Shadowhunter, I would love to be able to experience werewolves, vampires, demons, and countless other monsters and demons as a part of my regular life. Plus the interaction between the Shadowhunter world and the Victorian era was much more interesting to me than the modern time interaction. The only reason it’s coming in at #7 is because being a nameless Shadowhunter in that world probably means I would die pretty young, and I’m not a big fan of dying.

NUMBER VI: HOGWARTS

Unknown-2.jpeg

I think every book lover wants to live in the Harry Potter world, whether they’ll admit it or not. For this one I’m assuming that I have some magical powers, and attended Hogwarts or something. It’s magic. How could you not want magic? It would be cool living a “secret life” and hiding your magic from Muggles. Like any HP fan I’ve gone on to Pottermore and been sorted, and turns out I’m a Gryffindor. Don’t know if that would be the same if it were real, but just going through the wizarding experience would be amazing.

NUMBER V: TENERANT (KINGKILLER)

Unknown-3.jpeg

This may come as a surprise, but I think Tenerant would be one of the best worlds to live in. The magic is subtle, and doesn’t influence regular life very much, but it is still there. I don’t really have a lot to say about it because there is so much of it that is still a mystery, but the mystery is why it’s #5 on my list. I don’t imagine I would be smart enough to be a student at The University, but I imagine I am somewhat smart and have enough money to explore the world. I would love to learn from someone who attended The University, and maybe pick up a trick or two.

NUMBER IV: NARNIA

I think the biggest appeal of Narnia would be the different talking animals and the different creatures that inhabit the world. The one catch is that I don’t want to live my whole life in Narnia. I’d want to time jump basically. Come and go as I please, and see the change in Narnia every time I came back. It seems that humans were a rarity for some time in Narnia, so it would be cool to be a rare creature in the world, and then maybe come back to a point where humans were much more common (like in the books basically). I think my biggest goal would be to document Narnia’s history. Maybe come back every so often and talk to people who could tell me what happened since I was there last.

NUMBER III: RANDLAND (WHEEL OF TIME)

Randland-the-wheel-of-time-45578_485_364.jpg

I’m obsessed with Wheel of Time right now so that is definitely a contributing factor as to why its #3 on my list. I’m gonna say I lived before Rand lived, so I don’t have the books influencing my life at all. The biggest reason I would want to live there is because of the Aes Sedai. They are such a common part of the world that it would make life so much more interesting. I don’t expect to be anyone of great import, but maybe I could be a gleeman and travel the world, collecting stories and interacting with people from all over the world. PLUS, maybe if I was lucky I could be like Perrin and speak to wolves…but thats just a dream.

NUMBER II: MARVEL

Unknown-4.jpeg

Who wouldn’t want to be a superhero? Even some minor power would be cool, even a seemingly useless power can be useful in certain situations. The reason the Marvel Universe is #2 on my list is because whether or not I was a superhero, that world would be amazing. Yes, I know there is a high risk of dying from countless laser beams, finger snaps, buildings falling, or even interdimensional portals opening in my bedroom while I was sleeping and cutting me in half, but I think the risk is worth the reward. Getting to see Spider-Man swing by or climbing up my buildings wall would make 23 year old me happier than childhood me.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Middle Earth     Westeros     DC Universe     Star Trek     Azeroth

NUMBER I: ROSHAR

twok_endsheet-front-2-webres.jpg

The Stormlight Archive universe is by far my favourite world that I would want to live in. I’m just going to assume that I am not a member of the Knights Radiant, but that I am a light eyed person. The biggest reason I would want to live in that world is entirely because of the entire world’s dependence on gemstones. They’re used as currency, for light, for the Knight’s powers, and a bunch of other things I couldn’t begin to mention. I’ve always loved the medieval themed stories with knights and swords and stuff, but The Stormlight archive is the most interesting one that I have ever experienced.

What do you think about my Top 10 list? What worlds would be in your list? Let me know in the comments or shoot me an email. I’d love to see what worlds everyone wants to live in.
